Sea No Evil

Art benefit to preserve and protect the oceans of the world

On Saturday July, 12th 2008 the Sea No Evil Art Benefit will take place at the Riverside Art Museum located in the historic Downtown District of Riverside, California . To Die For is once again proud to work with Monster Media and give something back to the beautiful creatures of our ocean . This Art benefit is to raise money and awareness for Captain Paul Watson Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, a non-profit organization that is passionately dedicated to preserving the health of the worlds ocean and saving endangered mammals that are needlessly and mercilessly hunted and brutally slaughtered for nefarious purposes.

All of the staff at To Die For feel very passionately about this cause and the importance to help create public awareness . After the success we had with last years event featuring artists such as Shepherd Fairy form OBEY and our very own DEPH from To Die For we have kept the momentum going and have brought together what we think are some of the best tattooists in the world to donate artwork. On top of this, RVCA have also donated their time and art with some amazing pieces . All of the the donated art will be available for purchase through silent auction bidding on Saturday 12th July 2008.

Everything about this benefit is amazing, says To Die For co-owner Jason Welsher. To see this many people come together for such a special cause is inspiring and the support we've had from the To Die For artists donating their art and time is something we are truly grateful for.

Captain Paul Watson , Founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, will speak about the importance of his life's work. Renowned artist Shepherd Fairey will DJ in the art gallery and acclaimed singer songwriter Matt Costa will Perform on the roof of the museum. Free drinks will be provided to guests compliments of Sambazon, VeeV, and Imperial.

By supporting an event like this you'll walk away knowing you have done something positive and helped an amazing cause. With your help we can make a difference . We look forward to seeing you all on July 12th .

Sea No Evil came about when Riverside residents Derric and Erin Swinfard decided to take up a cause and use their networking for the good of the world’s oceans. They rounded up friends, artists, and business owners to create an art benefit that raised more than $30,000.

GRAPHOPOLI: World's 1st Urban Art Biennale

The Puerto Rico Museum of Art (MAPR) announced last May the selection of the artists for its upcoming project, Graphopoli, the World's 1st Urban Art Biennale, which will take place in Puerto Rico this summer from July 7th to the 20th. This innovative cultural program curated by Celina Nogueras Cuevas, will impact many of the main cities of Puerto Rico's including San Juan, Ponce, Caguas and Mayaguez which supported the event as host municipalities, assigning outdoor spots where simultaneous interventions will take place by urban artists.

With an open call for entries, the MAPR and the selection committee have drawn the best urban artists to participate in a contest where they will paint giant-scale structures. The jury composed by international figures like infamous Miss 17 from NY and artist/editor of Swindle Magazine, Sonik (Boston) and local professionals selected from over 40 submissions. The selection is composed by two categories which include Solo and Crew.. The first include artists such as: Bik-ismo, Sofía, Justsez, Larregui, Pun18 and Nepo; and the second composed by ADM, Corografico and OS. The artists would have an exceptional opportunity to intervene large scale uncommon places such as a water pump, a student residence building, sport center roof, a lighthouse viewpoint and a water tank, among others.

"This is an unprecedented event that will transform Puerto Rico into a World Capital of Urban Art", stated Celina Nogueras Cuevas, curator and coordinator of the project. Since the 90Zs, Puerto Rico has captivated the attention of Urban Artists from around the world. Many international personalities such as, Brasilian artist Os Gemeos, and American artists Shepard Fairey and Swoon, had come to the island to spread their art, exhibiting their unique urban style and techniques in alternative spaces.. "These important pieces have become part of the Urban Art Movement legacy, enriching our artistic patrimony created by Puerto Rican artist like Lee Quiñones, Dzine and many emergent figures that are defining the new generation of urban artists."

Graphopoli, the 1st urban art Biennale of Puerto Rico and the world is a project developed by the MAPR with the collaboration of UBS Financial Services of Puerto Rico and CEO Miguel Antonio Ferrer. In addition of the hosting municipalities, Graphopoli count with the support of brands like Glidden, Snickers, Montana Colors, Lo Nitido, and the program "Vive Cultura!" in the Mayor City. BLVD Gallery is proud to present for the month of June

"Hairy Metal Vengence"

new works by Bigfoot

June 13 - July 5, 2008
Reception June 13 6p - 10p

BLVD Gallery is proud to present the work of Oakland based artist Bigfoot. Bigfoot is a Bay area Graffiti legend and has been a major influence in the skateboard industry for close to a decade. Originally from New Jersey ,young Bigfoot fled to California to be closer to big trees . Disassociated from art school and human society, in 1994 he started writing "Bigfoot" in the streets of San Francisco with relentless fury .Working often with house paint and wooden panels ,his work depicts the conflict between the respect for nature held by the artist's cast of Bigfoot characters and the destructive agenda of mankind. Despite his reclusive nature, Bigfoot has managed to stay active in society ,designing skateboard graphics and footwear ,showing in galleries in America and Japan, and the release of his vinyl figure with Strangeco in 2004. His eponymous character and his love of heavy metal play a major role in his studio work as well as his highly recognized street art. Please join us at his opening reception Friday June 13 to Meet the artist and Ride the Lightning.

Expo M.A.C.

Exposition M.A.C. Crew

Channel 1 presents

"The Block Party"

in association with Mass Appeal Magazine, Play New Haven, Prestel Publishing, Upper Playground, Old Gold, Gourmet Kickz, Red Bull, and Ideat Village.

Channel 1 presents "The Block Party" for Ideat Village at Pitkin Plaza on Saturday June 14, 2008, the first day of Festival of Arts and Ideas . Join Channel 1 for one of the most unique urban experiences to transpire in recent New Haven history. We teamed up with graffiti writers, breakdancers, Gourmet Kickz, and Ego Trip's Sacha Jenkins and Chino BYI to produce an event that plays back to the community spirit of the early 80's.

Channel 1 has secured 100 ft of wall space for an aerosol jam. Pre-registration suggested for wall space. B boys and B girls will be in full effect for our breakdancing competition. Eight crews will compete in a 3-man jam for prizes and fame.

For those with literary interests, we present a book signing with Sacha Jenkins and Dave "Chino" Villorente. Sacha Jenkins is a member of Ego Trip, the hip-hop media collective, and a producer of VH1's new reality contest Miss Rap Supreme and The White Rapper Show. Chino is a graff writer, journalist and published author who has been illuminating the NY landscape with his art for over 20 years. These two will be doing a live signing of their recently released collaborative title called "Piecebook: The Secret Drawings of Graffiti Writers."

For more event schedule call 1(888) SHOP-CH1 or goto www.channel1online.com for further details. Rain date for event is Sunday, June 15.

Anno Domini // the second coming of Art & Design presents:

the debut gallery exhibition of GRAFFITI RESEARCH LAB, NYC

The U.S. Department of Homeland Graffiti Liquidation Sale!

The United States of America is going out of business! But here at the U.S. Department of Homeland Graffiti, we want to turn this moment of national embarrassment and hard times into real savings for you and your family. From June 4th through the 28th, the U.S.D.H.G and the Graffiti Research Lab are liquidating all confiscated, high-tech graffiti artifacts and tools, expunged evidence, court exhibits, anti-graffiti technology and office furnishings, priced to sell. So grab a handful of Euros or Mao Bucks and head on down to Anno Domini located between U.S. Routes 101 and 280 in Silicon Valley, California. Don't miss out on these sub-prime deals, because just like our empire, bargains of this nature won't last forever! Offer void in Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, and North Dakota. Local sales tax and service charges may apply.

The Graffiti Research Lab is dedicated to outfitting graffiti writers, artists, pranksters and protesters with open source tools for urban communication. The goal of the G.R.L. is to technologically empower individuals to creatively alter their surroundings on the scale of advertisers, corporations and the state in order to reclaim public space from both authoritarian and consumer culture. GRL Weapons of Mass Defacement (WMDs) are the result of numerous grants, awards and commissions from rogue governments, educational institutes and arts organizations. They have shown their work on five continents and will be featured in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Tate Modern in London and the National Art Museum of China in Beijing in 2008. Their first documentary video, "GRL: The Complete First Season", recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. They have been featured in or contributed to publications, books and other mass media, like the New York Times, Time Magazine, Time Asia, The Taipei Times, Excelsior, Time Out New York, the Village Voice, Rolling Stone, Esquire, Wired, Il Corriere Della Sera, NBC, ABC, CNN, Boingboing.net, Digg.com and on the front page of Youtube. But more importantly, thousands of ubiquitous, clandestine agents have been trained, via the web, to use GRL tools and techniques to create their own public interventions all over the world. Graffiti Research Lab splinter cells have formed in Amsterdam, Vienna, Barcelona, Toronto, Tijuana, Hong Kong, Taipei, Minneapolis and Australia and the GRL NYC is honored to be New York's elected representative to the U.S. Department of Homeland Graffiti. The GRL is a Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) production headquartered in the County of Kings: Brooklyn, NY. We are the GRL and we approve of this message.

THE NEW DUTCH MASTER - DELTA

Tuesday - Saturday 12 - 6pm, Thursdays 'til 9pm

DELTA is renowned for his complex three dimensional styles and visually spectacular, architecturally structured lettering.

Elms Lester Painting Rooms are pleased to present a much awaited exhibition of DELTA' s latest work: a showcase of the Dutch master's graphic and architecturally inspired works, including new paintings, 3D constructivist pieces and complex collages.

Boris Tellegen, aka DELTA, is an internationally acclaimed contemporary artist from Amsterdam who skilfully experiments with a variety of mediums in order to create his amazingly intricate paintings, prints, 3D sculptures, video works and installations. His work reminds the old Utopists and Constructivists and can be seen as portraits of industrial architecture.

The first DELTA tag appeared on the streets in 1984: through the years this Netherlands based artist has developed a complex and unique style that resembles isometric plans and plays with ideas of architecture and high tech futuristic vehicles.DELTA introduces an alien and idiosyncratic aesthetic into graffiti art that escapes the common logo-like word IDs. He has influenced writers all over the world for decades with his 3D letter style.

Boris Tellegen was born in 1968.

He became one of the pioneers of the European graffiti movement, in 1984, when he made his tag DELTA for the first time.

His work shows the hallmark of his time at the Faculty of Industrial Design at the Technical University Delft, from where he graduated with a degree in Industrial Design Engineering in 1994.

Delta's fine art paintings and sculptures have recently been exhibitied in Singapore / Malaysia, London and Italy. He has also produced work for musicians such as Linkin Park, Dj Vadim (Ninja Tune), Rima project on Jazzanova Compost Records, Dub Records and Alex Cortez.

DELTA has exhibited with Elms Lesters Painting Rooms since 2003 and this will be his first solo show in UK.

Artist Statement by Rich "BAMA" Admiral

From my beginnings as a graffiti artist in the early 70's, I've been on a quest to find my true inner voice; to try and get beyond the label of just being a "street artist". Yes I am the second person to sell a painting as a graffiti artist, (Razor Gallery - 1973). This boxed me into the graffiti art movement, but I was always searching for a more unique take on aerosol art. I never turned my back on my graffiti past, but I always wanted to do more than paint my name or please the gallery heads. To express myself from my heart and mind (I am so I paint). It is what I live for. I love to paint, I need to paint and I love to be different. With luck people will like the Bama I've become.

Gallery Statement by Eto Oro, Director es ORO Polymedia

Rich "BAMA" Admiral is a Bronx based contemporary expressionist painter and graffiti pioneer. He began "writing" in the New York subway system in the early 1970's. He then moved on to showing his work in the gallery system. Since then his work has been exhibited around the United States, Switzerland and Holland. In his self-titled solo installation Bama presents a small series of tonal paintings that resemble softened abstractions of Swiss surrealist H. R. Giger's work. Bama's show will also include a video installation and live DJ set by the artist.

Sofia Maldonado

The Tropical Storm

tropicalstorm_invite_copyx.jpg

Opening reception: Thursday, May 15th, 6-8pm

Magnan Emrich Contemporary is pleased to announce the debut solo show of Puerto Rican artist Sofia Maldonado. The exhibition presents video, paintings, and a large sculpture installation. The exhibition will be on view from May 15th - June 23st, 2008.

The Tropical Storm is a three-part project blending elements of street culture like skateboarding, punk rock and graffiti with a feminine Latina aesthetic and the chaotic natural energy of the Caribbean. The different elements of the project -The Bowl, Broken Boards and The Skate Bags - originate from the artist's objective to open a dialogue on the renovation of neglected public spaces and how fashion and consumerism influence counterculture youth movements (particularly how these movements are integrated into products and industries).

A skate mini-ramp will be installed in the center of the gallery designed and painted by the artist and will be available for local urban daredevils to attempt during the opening (thanks to the help of http://rockstarbearings.com

Sofia Maldonado was born in Puerto Rico in 1984. She received her BFA from Escuela de Artes Plasticas in San Juan and will complete her MFA in Painting from the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY this spring. She has taught various workshops on murals, as well as exhibited in Europe, New York, and Puerto Rico. Her collaborations with the exit collective were recently included in the "S" Files" Biennial at El Museo del Barrio in New York, NY. She lives and works in Brooklyn.

to an educational system that refuses to teach scientists how to draw. With this his paintings explode with a figurative nature that is influenced by Hindu an Buddhist deities, exotic animals and sex as well as rustic American quilts.

Each Figure is adorned with ghostly representations of the natural world... animals and plants that unfold from the body into the surrounding canvas. His chimeras are frozen with animalistic intensity in explosive and sometimes tortured positions.

AJ Fosik's eclectic handmade and intricately designed wood animal sculptures and paintings, combined with cryptic symbols, intrigue and provoke. Fosik creates an experience that at first glance evokes a questioning of familiar concepts and then pushes the viewer to look and think deeper. Inspired by subversive cultural influences which shift complacency, he creates pieces that suspend comfort while at the same time offer recognizable symbols and images. In this dynamic tension the art and the viewer hopefully come together in an expanded definition of culture and assumption.

Academics - Art, Music & Fashion

ac·a·dem·ics -learned or scholarly but lacking in worldliness, common sense, or practicality. That is a great way to explain the art world of yesteryear. Yet in this time and age there seems to be many pseudonyms for contemporary art and urban mediums. When an artist starts in a street or public setting and then brings that medium inside we aim to label it "Street Art." As to avoid labeling it what it is, Graffiti. Friday May 30th we welcome back an Arizona local who was notorious in the street scene merely 12 months ago. Pandas are the driving force that the viewer draws familiarity to witnessing in his work. This weekend that friendly smile and tenacity for "getting over" come to Brand X Clothing. This show is packed with multi mediums that thread together the exhibit like a tapestry of tastes throughout a visual stimulus for the observers taking. The art displayed is ranging from Wheat paste to silk screen & water colors. When fusing street art into the gallery format you often risk losing the look and feel that appeal to the work. Yet with this exhibit Disposable Hero brings a group of heavy hitters to support. Additional art featured: Local legend Mad One, HMPH, DOVE & FVS. There work combined can be seen on many street corners, back alleys and street stop signs covering the Arizona landscape.

Come join us for an evening of Art, Music & Fashion.

Electric Windows

On the weekend of May 16th, twenty artists of large-scale ephemeral work, will descend upon Beacon, NY, and help transform an old, electric blanket factory into an art destination. The now boarded-up windows of One East Main Street will turn the concept of a gallery inside-out--displaying eight foot by twelve foot work by artists with all different backgrounds, from Beacon's own Rick Price to world-renowned Pop, Street and graffiti artists, such as Ron English and Lady Pink.

This painting and installation will be open to the public with most of the artists painting live right in front of the building. Coinciding with Dia Beacon's fifth anniversary, this promises to be an exciting weekend.

Death Head

Growing up in Mexico, Death Head was greatly inspired by the annual holiday known as "Day of the Dead". Taking this century old tradition of celebrating life and death, and embracing it with a Punk Rock lifestyle and "fuck you" attitude, Death Head emerged as a cultural hybrid…forging the colors, sounds, spirituality, political and economical traits of these genera's. Interpreting life through the brutal, animalistic, primal side of humanity, Death Head began abstracting human faces (including his own) into a diversity of animal skulls, creating the inner man we all try to hide or deny. Death Head views himself as a shaman of sorts, as the doorman for the truth seekers looking for the occult, the macabre and spiritual awakening. His work brings the viewer closer to nature and helps bridge the gap between life, death, and the universe as a whole.

Aerosol Warfare is proud to showcase Death Head in his 1st solo exhibition. Come out and experience a full interactive installation in Houston's premier gallery space.

THE THREAT OF CHANCE

  • Josh MacPhee
  • Billy Mode
  • Chris Stain
  • The Polaroid Kidd

Opening Reception: Friday, May 2nd, 7pm - 10pm

The Threat of Chance art exposition is based on the temptation of possibility. The possibility of change in the face of stagnation, the possibility of hope in desperate times, the possibility of alternative thought and lifestyle in the doldrums of complacency.

For this installation a railroad shanty town will be recreated to further emphasis the struggle between hope and despair. Amidst a gallery filled of shacks made with found material and walls decorated with freight trains and decaying industry you will find photographs by boxcar culture enthusiast the Polaroid Kidd. Proletarian signs, flags, prints, and banners from author/activist Josh MacPhee. Interactive sculptures, drawings, paintings and stencils, from graffiti artist Billy Mode, and the sociological display of hand cut stencils by Chris Stain. The Threat of Chance art exposition is pure socialist propaganda , (at least that's how the mainstream will see it) , so stop by opening night and they'll tear you a new asshole.

Urban Art Show

THE OLD CINEMA will host an exhibition of urban art from 1st May with a private view on the first night. British and international street artists will showcase their work at the west London department store giving the public a rare opportunity to buy fresh art ahead of the galleries.

THE OLD CINEMA has become well-known for blending iconic styles of the past with contemporary design and hope that participating artists will relish the concept of placing their modern work with formal antique, vintage industrial and retro furniture.

Following the success of the young directors at the Short Films Night late last year, THE OLD CINEMA is hoping to bring more creative talent to a wider audience with its urban art show.

Work on display will vary in format and size.
