Shows and Events: This Month
About this calendar
At least 25,000 people per month read this page, so it's the place to be if you're having a graffiti-related show or a show with graffiti artists in it.
Your Show: Send ready-to-post plain text in email to info@graffiti.org and if it isn't obvious, explain why it's a graffiti-related event. Send the flyer later when it is done.
Think globally: Remember to include the name of your city, state, and country.
Strategy: Increase attendance and limit local competition by making early announcements. Last-minute posts might not be published.
Artists: Shows succeed when people show up!
Just send us the location and the dates as soon as you schedule a show. Anyone can send in an event tip.
Undated: Recurring events, calls for participation, new publications and products move to the Ongoing events page after a few weeks.
Updated: About once a week or so.
Looking for more toys and books? See below, then go to the Ongoing page to see other new releases. See also graffiti publications, and please support Art
Crimes and this calendar by buying stuff from our store.

Oakland's 8th Annual Art
& Soul Weekend
For decades, art institutions and collectors have usually defined
"fine art" to the exclusion of graffiti. Instead, the art form of
graffiti is banished to categories like "vandalism," "property
destruction," "gibberish," and the like. Graffiti artists worldwide
challenge dismissive notions about their work and their place among the
"masters," simply by creating. Their work brilliantly explodes - in
color, form, and content - beyond all boundaries.
To showcase the exceptional artistry of graffiti, The Joyce Gordon
Fine Art Gallery will host an exhibit during Oakland's 8th Annual Art
& Soul Weekend, August 30-31 & September 1, 2008.

art.les.nyc studios and GANJ1 are excited to announce "Mind-f-Art" - a
collaborative show with artists SEN ONE and Dmitry Gubin on Friday,
August 22rd at 7pm till midnight.
The evening will examine the political
strife concerning the current state of our country, and the title,
"Mind-f-Art" calls on the condition of our political conscious. The show
will feature new work by both artists, as well as a joint collaborative
piece.
SEN ONE's fascination for art started early on when he witnessed
the rolling canvas otherwise known as the subway system of New York
City. Growing up in both NYC and New Jersey he was presented with
various styles and concepts, which he interpreted visually.
Dmitry
Gubin was born on October 6, 1975 in Kharkov, USSR (now Ukraine). His
father, a Jewish dissident artist, was the first to introduce Dmitry to
art and was responsible for Dmitry's initial art education. After
receiving a refugee status Dmitry and his family have emigrated to the
US in 1989. Gubin is inspired by the works of German Expressionists,
Abstract Expressionists, graffiti writers, as well as urban decay.
The evening will also feature live performances by
singer/songwriter Dev Jana, and San Francisco based artist, GANJ1.
As
usual at art.les.nyc studios, The Tiki Bar located in the Jamaican
Lounge will be full stocked with Grog-n-Scrod Sangria and a selection of
beers and water for a humble suggested donation price.

An interactive coloring book exhibition for a good cause/
Montréal’s Under Pressure international graffiti festival and Galerie d’art Yves Laroche - come together for a new interactive exhibition: Color Me Bad. Over the past 13 years, Under Pressure has invited over 30 artists to produce original artwork for the covers of their magazine and their annual event limited edition t-shirts. Now, these images will be transferred and stretched onto canvas stripped down to a basic outline: like a coloring book. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Color Me Bad invites artists and guests, including children and adults, to draw on the canvases using crayons. Being silently auctioned off throughout the evening, proceeds raised from the canvases and catalogues will be donated to the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Also exhibiting will be a Wall of Fame portrait series of emerging and established graffiti artists by Danny Portieous, taken at last year’s Under Pressure festival.

INSIDERS, OUTSIDERS & THE MIDDLE
In conjunction with Giant Robot, Scion presents Insiders, Outsiders & The Middle at its 4,500 square foot Installation L.A. Gallery. At Giant Robot, the definition of art ranges from straight contemporary painting to sculpted figures (which were considered action figures just a few years ago). This exhibition celebrates not the disparate mediums, but the divergent mindsets of artists--as well as the gray areas.
Insiders are artists who work so hard in front of their computers that they don't leave their chairs long enough to hang their pieces on walls. More often, their art is found onscreen, in print, and on T-shirts. Adrian Johnson is an example from the U.K., with a retro drawing style inspired by children's books. The other Insiders are from Japan. Noriko Ashino runs the A Piece of Design firm, and specializes in a variety of disciplines including character design and graphics. Sometimes known as ZariganiWorks, the duo of Taro Mukasa and Yoshitane Sakamoto are responsible for the infamous Suicide Bomb Button, have created the Kore Janai Robo (which has gone from handmade wood figurines to vinyl characters with a TV show), and freelance design toys, characters, and products.
Outsiders include Space Invader, a street artist from Paris who makes his mark on walls around the world and calls each tiled piece an "invasion." He painstakingly documents each one before it gets ripped down—either by city workers or collectors—and publishes his work in books and maps. Kami is revered as a graffiti legend in Tokyo and has successfully transitioned from the streets to art galleries. His pieces often resemble flowing water.
And then there's The Middle. The original work of Kyoto-based Shinya Yamamoto has been found in many exhibitions as well as the drum set of Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley. Part Basquiat and part left-brain madness, his style is free flowing and dreamy. Nao Harada, proprietor of the Wrecks clothing line, sketches, draws, and paints with no regard to the meaning of art. He rides around on his BMX leaving stickers and tags around Tokyo. The lone American in the group, Ed Trask, is from Virginia. He tours constantly as the drummer for the veteran punk band Avail. Through painting, he recalls and reinterprets the slices of Americana that he sees on the road. Although there is no obvious correlation between the artists, they form a powerful cross-section of creative forces that are physically active with their art. They belie the image of the stationary artist and pose the question of how they will co-exist in a restrained gallery setting.

MISS VAN & VICTOR CASTILLO
CANTO NEGRO Y BRUJERIAS
A show presented at MERRY KARNOWSKY GALLERY
New Paintings, Drawings, Sculpture and Limited Edition Giclées by Miss
Van and Victor Castillo
OPENING RECEPTION: SATURDAY, 26 JULY, 19:00 – 22:00 H
EXHIBITION DATES: 26 JULY – 23 AUGUST 2008
GALLERY HOURS: TUESDAY – SATURDAY, 12:00 – 18:00
Merry Karnowsky Gallery Berlin is proud to present CANTO NEGRO Y
BRUJERIAS, featuring the paintings of Barcelona-based artists Miss Van
(France) and Victor Castillo (Chile). The two unfold their unique but
harmonious iconographies in a pictorial exercise of intersecting ideas.
These artists approach from their personal perspectives subjects like
seduction, desire, enchantment, and the game of infantile cruelty. The
title of the exhibition attempts to unite these proposals and at the
same time, alludes to Spanish culture, superstition and witchcraft as
basic context, and dark invocations of common ghosts.
The "poupees" of Miss Van, always surrounded in sensational
atmospheres, embody the surrounding energies of the loving spell that
they seduce and catch. All are portrayed in mystical scenarios, between
meditation and liberation of evil, introspection and exorcism. Through
their closed eyes, we enter into the private worlds of each, reflecting
on their dark side and feminine fragility. Miss Van's work has shown in
the United States, France, England, Austria, Italy, Spain, the
Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany and Australia.
Victor Castillo shows us a mixture of classic and comic painting
loaded with infantile personages of subjects: macabre, joy, seduction
and the unscrupulous pleasures of the destruction game. At the same time
he also makes references to contemporary realities and a new
generation's stimulations from the increasing bombardment by the media.
Castillo's work has shown in Spain, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, the United
States, Canada, Belgium and Taiwan.

BLVD Gallery proudly presents "Pneumonia, Isolation, and Disorder" a show of new works by Deuce 7. Deuce 7 is a graffiti artist from Minneapolis who is also part of a burgeoning underground subculture of Freight train hoppers. He travels across the country riding the rails, painting his work on trains, in tunnels, squats, and wherever he can do his thing. Deuce 7's approach to graffiti comes not from a cultural identity like hip hop but from his love of the Railroad and it's history. He grew up train spotting, living in front of a huge railyard, and after noticing the colorful graffiti on the rail cars he decided that this would be a way for him to contribute to rail culture.
Deuce 7's work shares the flavor of the "Hobo" Glyphs that rail workers have marked freight cars with for over a century while propelling the look into the 21st century with his studied handstyles and vibrant color schemes. In 2007 Deuce7 made a trip to NYC to do graffiti and experience the Mecca of Street Art. After 2 short weeks he had taken the city by storm and was profiled in the Village Voice with the tagline "Is a guy from Minnesota the new king of New York street art?", A very impressive achievement for a previously unknown graffiti artist from the midwest in a city renowned for it's dislike of intruding outsiders.
This will be his first solo show of drawings and paintings on the West Coast.

COLLECTION RIK REINKING
From the 14th of June until the 28th of September 2008 the audience at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad will be able to gain an insight into a highly interesting period in modern art. The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad has succeeded in borrowing more that 60 works of art by internationally acclaimed artists from a large German private collection. The exhibition offers a great opportunity for getting some idea of pivotal aspects of contemporary art.
In the exhibition entitled Call it what you like! COLLECTION RIK REINKING, the audience will thus, in Silkeborg, be able to experience works of art which challenge the prevailing conception of art, from mid-June and three-four months onwards. The selection of works of art for the exhibition takes as its' starting point Conceptual Art of the 1960's and -70's, Minimalism and Pop Art. All of these categories are well represented in Rik Reinking's collection.
The collector, the 32 years old Rik Reinking, has for some time now collaborated closely with employees at The Art Centre Silkeborg Bad in making the exhibition a interesting platform for the audience's encounter with the forms of expression of contemporary art. There will be made good use of the exhibition areas.
Reinking's motive for building a significant international collection is his passionate interest in contemporary art and in communicating art.
The exhibitions includes works of art by Nir Alon, Carl Andre, Hermine Anthoine, Herbert Baglione, Miroslav Balka, Banksy, John Von Bergen, Rolf Bergmeier, Guillaume Bijl, John Bock, Victor Bonato, Boxi, Daniele Buetti, Werner Büttner, Baldur Burwitz, James Lee Byars, Andre Cadere, Lawrence Carroll, Max Cole, John Mccracken, Amie Dicke, Brad Downey, Jimmie Durham, Henrik Eiben, Johannes Esper, Robert Filliou, Urs Frei, Tom Früchtl, Hamish Fulton, Gregory Green, Nan Goldin, Rodney Graham, Till F.E.Haupt, Georg Herold, Jim Hodges, Mark Jenkins, Joe Jones, Izumi Kato, Wulf Kirschner, Jon Kessler, Imi Knoebel, Gary Kuehn, Toshiya Kobayashi, Barbara Kruger, Ange Leccia, Konrad Lueg, Daniel Man, Jonathan Meese, Björn Melhus, Jonathan Monk, Piotr Nathan, Bruce Nauman, Ernesto Neto, Cady Noland, Obey, Os Gemeos, Tony Oursler, Markus Paetz, Blinky Palermo, Stefan Panhans, Dan Peterman, Pius Portmann, Stephen Prina, Richard Prince, Robert Rauschenberg, Rudolf Reiber, Mirko Reisser (DAIM), Klaus Rinke, Rolf Rose, Ulrich Rückriem, Sam Samore, Michael Schmeichel, Till Schwieker, Santiago Sierra, Roman Signer, David Simpson, Rainer Splitt, Stohead, Thorsten Tenberken, Tilt, Rosemarie Trockel, Günter Tuzina, Dimitris Tzamouranis, Meyer Vaisman, Miss Van, Ben Vautier, Ludwig Vandefelde, Vitche, Johannes Wald, Lawrence Weiner, Pablo Wendel, Stefan Wewerka, Johannes Wohnsei

Artist Survey
My name is Sanah Choudhry and I'm a third year student at Durham
University. I'm currently undergoing my dissertation which I have chosen
to base around Graffiti. I would be really grateful if you could answer
a few questions. It will really boost my
dissertation work and give me a better insight into how artists such as
yourself perceive graffiti within today's culture.
Obviously you will be anonymous and all your details that I have,
which is actually only your email adds, will not be produced in the
dissertation document itself, and will be kept entirely confidential.
Please let me know if you do want your "name" to be acknowledged because
I will be more than happy to add it in - in fact it will probably look
better.

at the Tate Modern Museum
In the first commission to use the building's iconic river façade, and
the first major public museum display of street art in London, Tate

NATURE INTERSECTS WITH THE URBAN ENVIRONMENT
AT DENVER BOTANIC GARDENS
Urban Nature
DENVER- Always an urban oasis, Denver Botanic Gardens is embracing the city in new ways this year. The Gardens' 2008 signature exhibition, "Urban Nature," explores the intersection of the urban environment and the natural world through art and horticultural practices, outlining strategies that all city dwellers can employ to evoke the natural world as green space diminishes amid concrete and steel.
A sense of contrast, yet balance, with the natural gardens will be realized through paintings by more than 10 local, national and internationally-known street-style painters and mural artists.
Among these prominent international personalities are artists Lady Pink, Mac, and Siloette - all of whom have contributed to the ever-evolving history of street-style art. New York City-area community activist, Lady Pink, has transitioned from painting subway trains in the '70s and '80s to creating grand-scale murals throughout New York City. Phoenix-based Mac draws inspiration from the surrounding Mexican and Chicano culture of the American Southwest, and cites artists Caravaggio, Mucha, and Vermeer as influential. Siloette, who currently resides in Los Angeles, is recognized mainly for her feminine subject matter, unique flowing style and organic ingredients; which can easily be compared to a modern interpretation of art nouveau. Frequently, dominant black outlines reference her previous work in stained glass.
Other local and regional talent includes artists Amanda Marie, Elisabeth Bunker, Delton Demarest, Dread, Sophie Fernandez, Javier Flores, Stevon Lucero, Jolt, Mission, Adam Moorhead, Todd Robinson, Ian Rumley, and Wiser.
These street murals will be created on temporary panels situated within the natural beauty of the Gardens' York Street site, forging visual relationships that both surprise and resonate. The panels, produced by James Hardie Building Products are made of environmentally friendly materials including wood pulp, cement, sand and water. These materials, which are low in toxicity and have been recycled up to four times, reflect the importance of sustainability to the Gardens' core values.
Balcony displays, container gardening, and the concept of the urban homestead and other unique horticultural practices for city dwellers will be highlighted, as well. These educational programs include discussions with author Rick Darke, who will give a talk titled "In Your Face: Ethics and Urban Ecology" on Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. Darke will articulate his belief that all people should see and celebrate the dynamics of cultural and biological diversity, and find beauty in unlikely things and utility in common ground.
"'Urban Nature' seeks to demonstrate how, in a contemporary world that embraces industrialization and technology, the human connection with the earth requires more nurturing than ever," said Lisa Eldred, Director of Exhibitions and Programs. "Not only will the city be brought into the Gardens, the Gardens will venture out into the urban environment with programs and stimulating installations."
"Urban Nature" will include a Community Gardens feature that demonstrates the concepts of community gardening. This component will be complemented by original sculptures from Bill, Judy and Robert Schempp of "Mind to Metal." These metalworks will contain weather-resistant photographs by the Gardens' official photographer, Scott Dressel-Martin.
Pertinent issues facing city life will be addressed through a comprehensive program schedule, including a discussion on the healing power and deliciousness of wild plants, classes on raising chickens in the city, and hands-on instruction in creating gardens for balconies or terraces. Also, spoken word presentations will be delivered at a Poetry Slam! and Open Mic Night at Denver Botanic Gardens on Monday, May 12, from 7 - 9 p.m., co-presented by the University of Denver's Writing Program.
Guided tours of the "Urban Nature" exhibit will be offered every Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Since its inception in the 1970s, hip hop has been arguably the most influential and popular musical form in America. Its popularity extends beyond the urban centers of its inception and pervades youth culture throughout the world. Images of hip hop stars are as pervasive as the music itself, and the National Portrait Gallery is featuring the work of artists who have explored this phenomenon. David Scheinbaum has been photographing hip hop artists since 2000, both in concert and offstage, including such celebrated groups as Public Enemy, Blackalicious, Phar Cyde, De La Soul and Jurassic-5. Kehinde Wiley, best known for his large, colorful paintings of anonymous young black men, has created portraits of hip hop artists such as LL Cool J and Ice T, each based on a famous European or American painting from the 17th through 19th centuries. Nikki Giovanni wrote a poem that will be transcribed onto walls in the exhibition, and also interpreted artistically by artist Shinique Smith. Two Washington, D.C./Baltimore-based graffiti artists - CON and AREK - created four portrait murals to be installed in a hallway that connects the galleries. Jefferson Pinder created three video self-portraits that will be included in the installation. Curators for the exhibition are Frank A. Goodyear III, assistant curator of photographs and Brandon B. Fortune curator of paintings; Jobyl A. Boone, a Smithsonian predoctoral fellow is the guest curator.
Press preview Feb. 5, 9:30 a.m.
A booklet that accompanies the exhibition will be available in the museum's bookstore.
